Josh Zeid will miss the rest of the season after his foot surgeries in the upcoming weeks. ( Smiley N. Pool / Houston Chronicle ) It was discovered early on in the season that MLB athlete Josh Zeid would miss the rest of the season in order to fix the sesamoiditis in both of his feet. The Houston Astros reliever was required to have a separate operation for each foot, broken up by six weeks of healing. With the operation of his right foot completed at the end of July, Zeid prepared for his second surgery of the left foot just this past October. The timing of his surgery as well as the projected healing time puts in question his readiness and capability for the 2015 season as well as any chances of an Opening Day bullpen appearance.

Sesamoiditis is an unpleasant foot condition characterized by pain in the balls of the feet. If think you’re struggling with sesamoiditis, contact Dr. Michael Newman and Dr. Denise Kohler of Pennsylvania. Our doctors will perform a diagnostic exam and treat your condition thoroughly and effectively.

Sesamoiditis
Sesamoiditis is a condition of the foot that affects the ball of the foot. It is more common in younger people than it is in older people. It can also occur with people who have begun a new exercise program, since their bodies are adjusting to the new physical regimen. Pain may also be caused by the inflammation of tendons surrounding the bones. It is important to seek treatment in its early stages because if you ignore the pain, this condition can lead to more serious problems such as severe irritation and bone fractures.

Causes of Sesamoiditis

  • Sudden increase in activity
  • Increase in physically strenuous movement without a proper warm up or build up
  • Foot structure: those who have smaller, bonier feet or those with a high arch may be more susceptible

Treatment for sesamoiditis is non-invasive and simple. Doctors may recommend a strict rest period where the patient forgoes most physical activity. This will help give the patient time to heal their feet through limited activity. For serious cases, it is best to speak with your doctor to determine a treatment option that will help your specific needs.

internationalChildren attending the school system in Richmond, Virginia were encouraged to participate in International Walk to School Day on October 8th. Children, parents, and school teachers of various Richmond Schools were invited to participate in the event and learn about the benefits of exercise. The day’s activities involved showing students the importance of pedestrian safety and safe walking route to school as well as promoting physical activity and health. Linwood Holton Elementary School of Richmond also hosted a Mini-wellness Fair in an attempt to teach children how to create healthy lifestyles.

All parents should teach their children the importance of caring for their feet. If your child needs foot treatment, see podiatrists Dr. Michael Newman and Dr. Denise Kohler of Pennsylvania. Our doctors will care for your child’s foot needs.

How to Keep Your Child’s Feet Healthy

Throughout childhood, it is very crucial for children to have and maintain good health and proper care of their feet. With good foot health starting at an early age, foot problems and diseases can be prevented in the future. As children continue to develop so do their feet, and require different techniques of care and maintenance.

Even though babies do not begin walking until later stages, their feet should be taken care of properly:

  • Stay away from socks that are too tight for your baby’s feet. This can cause pain and allow less circulation
  • Encourage your baby to move their feet as much as possible so they feel comfortable with them

When your baby begins to learn how to walk, do not panic if they are unsteady on their feet. Toddlers are just getting used to the way in which their feet work so wobbliness is completely acceptable.

When your child grows out of their toddler years, here are a few steps they should take to stay with good health within their feet:

  • Practice proper hygiene with them
  • Be observant of any injuries that might occur

A study by Chinese scientists focused on acupuncture and how it serves to benefit people affected by painful foot and ankle conditions. The study found that acupuncture is a very effective treatment when it comes to addressing heel pain. This includes treating conditions of the heel such as plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis.

The group of scientists used sixty-six patients that were dealing with ongoing heel pain. After a six month period, the scientists found that the patients that completed the acupuncture treatment gave it an effectiveness rating of 97% while those who only used drugs were only granted a 76% rating.

Your life can greatly be affected by even simplest heel pain. If your heel hurts, see Dr. Michael Newman of Pennsylvania. Dr. Newman can treat your heel pain.

Causes of Heel Pain

● Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

● Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

● Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

- Wearing ill-fitting shoes
- Wearing non-supportive shoes
- Weight change
- Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a thing of the past.

With the advancements in technology and greater knowledge of how muscles and joints work, physical therapists can turn things around dramatically.

As the one who leads United States of America, President Barack Obama has to be on his feet with all the meetings and conferences he attends. Due to this, it should come as no surprise that Obama contends with pain in his right foot. Obama’s physician, Dr. Ronny L. Jackson, stated that Obama’s symptoms are consistent with “regular recurring plantar fasciitis”.

Chronic plantar fasciitis tends to be common among middle aged people, especially those with overworked feet. Fortunately, our president remains up to the task and is said not to be hampered by his foot pain.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful. If you are suffering from heel pain, consult with podiatrist Dr. Michael Newman of Pennsylvania. Dr. Newman can treat your foot and ankle conditions.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis refers to heel and arch pain caused by an inflammation of the connective tissues on the bottom of the foot.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Ill-fitting shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices.
  • Shockwave therapy – sends sound waves to the areas where pain is experience.  Requires multiple sessions.  This is used for very persistent cases of plantar fasciitis.
  • Ultrasound-guided technique with steroid injections into the plantar fascia.  This is from a relatively new and small study, but was shown to be effective in most cases treated.

New Studies on Treatment
According to groundbreaking treatment option studies, Luca M. Sconfienza, M.D. says that ultrasound with steroid injections was effective in over 95% of cases that involve plantar fasciitis. This process involves anesthesia and is a single process, out-patient treatment that was discovered to be highly effective. Luca M. Sconfienza M.D. presented her study at an annual meeting for the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). Be sure to speak with your podiatrist about different methods that can be used, as well as finding out what treatment options they offer.
